        自1979年新一代的豹2首先生产，并经过多次升级改造。包括改进的数据链传输和数字化指挥系统。豹 2系列坦克在经过两次大规模的升级改造后，原装备的由莱茵金属公司生产的L44 120毫米 坦克炮已经被新型的L55型代替，配合使用最新研制的DM53长杆脱壳穿甲弹    （APFSDS- T），可以在同样的距离击毁更厚的坦克装甲。
